Rescued Apple Juice

21st October 2017

Egan Waste were able to salvage a large quantity of apple juice that had been involved in a road traffic incident. The juice is ideal for the Foodbank, 1 litre cartons and with a best before date not until June 2018. Having 9 months to make use of the apple juice means there is plenty of time to give it out to those who are in need.

Fr Michael, manager of Pontypridd Foodbank, said, ‘I’m always looking for a way to say yes to offers like this. It would have been such a waste to have poured all this apple juice down the drain when we have people who can make use of it. This puts us in a very unusual position – that we are not short of fruit juice, it’s one of the things we nearly always need more of.’

A lorry arrived at St Luke’s Church with 3 pallets of juice on the back and so 5 people got to work moving the cartons off the lorry and into the storage. The container was soon filling up and a table beginning to groan under the weight. A total of 1,144 litres was put into the Foodbank’s storage container. However, there was still more apple juice available which it was hoped could be delivered to Rhondda Foodbank.

It is great that companies are looking for better solutions to such incidents than simply throwing away good things and that the Foodbank Network is an avenue people are looking to support.
